Better services, not more services

As a business owner I am always paying attention to how other companies operate and market their businesses. Recently I have noticed that some companies tend to just offer more services to try to get more business. Why don’t companies just stick to what they are good at and outsource or parter with other companies for the rest? We are a web design, development and internet marketing company. That’s it. We won’t do whatever you want just because we can and someone would write a check for it. However, many companies will and do. If they have a designer that ‘can’ create logos, or ‘can’ make marketing brochures they will then start advertising thats what they do and start trying to get business for that. Or, if they have a guy on staff that can work on networks, servers, install a phone system they will start offering that service too. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I look at it as Jack Welch looked at GE. Each product division was reviewed; if they were the best, or could truly be the best at offering that service they would stay. Otherwise if that division was not poised to be the best he would sell the division. Be the best at the services you offer, don’t do whatever someone wants just because they will pay you for it. It makes it harder to explain what you do, and harder for others to identify what your company does. We don’t do branding, we don’t do identities, we don’t setup networks, we won’t manage your servers, we won’t shoot a commercial for you, we won’t write a huge application that doesn’t run on the web. Be the best at what you do, not mediocre at everything you do. If you can’t realistically be the absolute best at a service than consider finding a company to partner with for that service. | Comments | Currently, there are no comments. Be the first to post one!
